Format 01
The local meetup
Recurring, small, usually free or nearly so, organised by volunteers around one subject in one city. The value comes from returning: the third visit is worth more than the first three combined.
When people compare professional platforms, the option that keeps outperforming per hour spent is not a platform at all. It is being in a room. Here is what the formats actually cost you, in the currency that matters — time.

Time cost
2–3 hrs
monthly
Format 02
Annual, expensive, dense. Most of the value is in the corridors rather than the talks, which is why arriving with three names you want to meet outperforms arriving with an open mind and a full schedule.
Time cost
2–4 days
annually
Format 03
The most underrated format, because it removes the awkwardness entirely. Everyone has a shared task, so conversation has somewhere to start and a natural reason to continue afterwards.
Time cost
Half day
occasional
Format 04
Regional branches of professional bodies. Formal, credential-linked, and often containing the people who set standards in a field. Slower to warm up than a meetup and considerably more durable once it does.
Time cost
Quarterly

In-person networking is regularly recommended as though it were free. It is not. It costs evenings, travel, money and — for a lot of people — a real amount of social energy that has to come from somewhere.
It is also not equally available. Geography, caring responsibilities, disability, shift work, visa status and simple cost all change what is realistic. Advice that ignores this is advice written for someone else.
Educational information only. This page describes general categories of in-person professional activity. It is not career, employment, financial or legal advice, and no networking, hiring or income outcome is promised or implied.
No affiliation, no listings, no sales. This is an independent publication. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, authorised by or endorsed by any event organiser, association, venue or platform. No specific event, organisation or product is named, promoted or ranked here, and nothing is sold on this page.
Verify before you pay. Event costs, membership fees, refund terms and accessibility provisions are set by each organiser and change. Confirm them directly before booking.
